Play-by-Post Rules

In the realm of Play-by-Post, every word shapes the world and every action, no matter how small, echoes through time. Adventures unfold at the pace of thought and imagination, allowing players to explore, strategize, and immerse themselves deeply in the narrative. However, to ensure fair play and foster an engaging experience for everyone, certain rules and guidelines must be followed.

These rules are not just constraints—they are the framework that ensures the story flows smoothly and every participant’s voice is heard. Respect for the world, the characters, and each other is paramount. So, take your time, craft your posts with care, and let the story emerge naturally. In this shared tale, every choice counts, and every post builds upon the last.

Welcome to a world where words are your weapon, creativity is your compass, and patience is your greatest ally.

Avrae supports INLINE commands for more complex play, allowing you to roll and act within a single post. This makes PbP gameplay faster and more fluid.

  • INLINE Commands Overview:
Adding [[ ]] brackets around dice formulas during conversation allow those rolls to result after sending your message.
    I attack the goblin with my shortsword [[1d20 + 6]] for a total of [[1d6 + 3]] piercing damage.

Results with a response like so:
    …the goblin with my shortsword (1d20 (6) + 6 = 12)… …for a total of (1d6 (2) + 3 = 5) piercing damage.

Discord serves as the primary platform for communication, collaboration, and gameplay in our PbP sessions. It offers flexible tools for organizing posts, formatting messages, and interacting both in and out of character. With the right setup, Discord transforms into a dynamic storytelling environment, making it essential to master a few basic tools before diving into the action. Below, you’ll find tutorials and tips on how to get the most out of Discord for our campaigns.

To ensure smooth communication and timely responses, it’s essential to configure your notification settings for each campaign channel. Proper setup ensures you don’t miss key interactions or updates in the PbP game, helping maintain the flow of the narrative.

Keep in mind if you set it to ONLY @ MENTIONS you are responsible for checking in and keeping up.

Clear communication is vital in PbP, and Markdown formatting helps distinguish important details. While the DM will always use formatting for clarity, players are encouraged to do the same to enhance the experience. Use bold, italics, and quotes to emphasize key actions, thoughts, or information.

Pinned messages highlight important information for easy access. Use them to catch up on missed content or reminders. The DM will rotate pins regularly to reflect the most relevant details and keep the campaign’s focus sharp.

Out-of-Character (OOC):

  • Do: Use ((OOC)) or separate channels for planning and coordination.
  • Don’t: Interrupt IC conversations with OOC remarks in the same post unless necessary.

In-Character (IC):

  • Do: Stay in character to maintain immersion in the story.
  • Don’t: Metagame or use player knowledge to influence your character’s actions.

We use various bots to streamline gameplay. Familiarize yourself with their basic HELP commands for smoother interactions during the campaign.

  • Example: /help to display available commands for each bot.
  • Bot List: Avrae, Craig, Custom RPG, Dragon’s Pawn, RPForge
In Play-by-Post (PbP) games, players are expected to post consistently, communicate any absences, and follow the GM’s guidance. Courteous behavior and respecting others’ posts ensure smooth gameplay. It's important to separate in-character (IC) and out-of-character (OOC) content for clarity and resolve disputes privately to maintain the game’s flow. Adhering to these principles keeps the experience engaging and fair for everyone involved.
  • Communication: Notify others if you’ll be absent.
  • Follow GM Rules: Respect the GM’s decisions and game structure.
  • Disputes: Resolve disagreements privately, not in public channels.
  • Courtesy: Use respectful language and avoid personal attacks.
  • Post Frequency & Editing: Post regularly and avoid disruptive post edits.
When joining one of Azerep's PbP Campaigns you are expected to be familiar with these tools and resources.
